My name is Ewout Arkenbout (1986). I was a PhD candidate at the BioMechanical Engineering (BME) department. Over the course of my education, I developed an interest in the design and development of medical instruments. Often, the facets involved in (re)designing such instruments are various, and rarely only limited to mechanical problems. Clinical issues, ergonomics, human factors, dimensional limitations, patient variability and various other factors all have large impacts on the design and function of medical instrumentation. The challenge to solve all these issues, and combine them into an elegant (and preferably simple robust mechanical) solution is what has captivated me.

My PhD work was focused on the development of control strategies for dendritic (i.e. multi-branched) instrumentation for skull base surgery. To this end I developed a setup that allows for the coupling of physical hand motions to virtual (dendritic) instrument movements. This setup functions as a design tool for the assessment of control strategies of any simulated steerable instrument. In this way we can try out and get a feel for any chosen control strategy for any envision instrument before we go on towards the actual prototyping stage.
